The Health & Wellness Institute (HWI)

Transforming person-centred wellness by combining innovative research, student training, and community partnerships to improve health outcomes in Nova Scotia and beyond.

With over 35 interdisciplinary researchers from Acadia University and Université Sainte-Anne, the Health & Wellness Institute is uniquely positioned to lead interdisciplinary, applied research on rural and community issues. Our focus is:

  • optimizing team-based health care;
  • facilitating healthcare accessibility;
  • maintaining health and wellness during life transitions; and
  • using technology to provide in-home wellness to rural community members.

To achieve our goals, we have partnered with the Nova Scotia Health Innovation Hub, regional collaborative care centres, government agencies and other health care groups. The research generated within the Health & Wellness Institute will provide solid strategies, based on evidence that can be rolled out across the province. This research will also establish Nova Scotia as a leader in primary care and community health transformation.

"Communities around the globe are facing complex health challenges – chronic illness, mental health strains, aging populations, and barriers to care. The Health and Wellness Institute is a bold response to this crisis, grounded in Acadia University’s deep commitment to well-being, research excellence, student education and training, and community partnerships. With your support, we will lead a new era of holistic, inclusive, and accessible health solutions that empower individuals, train tomorrow’s health leaders, and transform care in the places that need it most."

Dr. Jonathon Fowles, PhD, Director, Health and Wellness Institute
